Lang to Present at the National Business Institute’s Real Estate Law Seminar

Michael Lang, an attorney with the law firm of Bose McKinney & Evans LLP, will provide workable solutions for challenging real estate issues at the National Business Institute’s upcoming real estate law seminar.

The program, Advanced Issues in Real Estate Law, will take place on Oct. 4, from 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m., at the Hilton Indianapolis North, 8181 North Shadeland Ave., Indianapolis, IN 46250. Lang, one of five speakers scheduled to present, will address the tax aspects of real estate transactions including: legal entity selection; minimizing the transfer tax burden; using cost segregation to lower your bill; and maximizing capital gains.

An attorney in the Real Estate Group of Bose McKinney & Evans LLP, Lang represents landlords, tenants, developers, builders and business owners in commercial real estate and commercial lending matters. Specifically, he drafts and negotiates leases, loan documents, mortgages, purchase agreements, and easements. He also assists commercial clients in connection with real estate property tax appeals. In addition, Lang has a particular focus on shopping center law.

Lang also represents banks and other lenders in loan workouts and developing strategies for recovering and disposing of collateral for the maximum value. He also assists business owners in the formation of new businesses and other corporate issues.

Prior to and during law school, Mr. Lang worked as a deputy assessor in the office of the Perry Township Assessor in Marion County.

Shoultz, Townsend to Address Wind Energy Development in Indiana

The program, THE WINDS OF CHANGE: Wind Leases in Indiana will take place from 9 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. on Nov. 10 at the ICLEF Conference Facility, 230 East Ohio Street—5th Floor, Indianapolis, IN 46204. Shoultz will address issues of particular interest to landowners who are approached by wind farmers interested in developing their land, while Townsend will focus on wind farm litigation issues. Specific topics to be addressed include property acquisition, landowner contract concerns; county ordinances; compensation models, and regulatory approvals.

Nikki Shoultz is a partner in the Utility Group and a member of the Renewable Energy Group and represents clients with energy, telecommunications, technology, e-commerce, wind, water and sewer matters. Ms. Shoultz has assisted landowners, developers, municipalities and utilities with wind leases, power supply agreements, easements, zoning and service territory disputes, water and sewer capacity issues, contract disputes, main extension agreements, annexation and real estate transactions.

The law firm of Bose McKinney & Evans LLP is pleased to announce that Oni N. Harton has joined the firm as an associate in the Estate and Wealth Transfer Planning Group.

Harton received her juris doctorate from the Indiana University School of Law – Indianapolis, magna cum laude, in 2008. Upon graduation from law school, Harton served for two years as a clerk to the Honorable Frank Sullivan Jr. in the Indiana Supreme Court. She also worked as a legal extern at the Indiana Board of Tax Review, a judicial extern for The Honorable Patricia A. Riley in the Indiana Court of Appeals, and as a summer associate for Bose McKinney & Evans while in law school.

Harton serves as the executive articles editor for the Indiana Law Review and has earned several recognitions for her professional and academic achievements including: Patrick J. Burns Excellence in Tax Award; Black Law Student’s Association Academic Achievement Award; Silver Level Pro Bono Service Award; Forrest E. Jump Memorial Scholarship; and the Lefstein Legacy Scholarship.

Harton earned her bachelor of arts from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2002. Patton to Speak at Continuing Legal Education Programs for the American Judicature Society

The law firm of Bose McKinney & Evans LLP is pleased to announce that partner George T. Patton Jr. will speak at two continuing legal education programs for the American Judicature Society.

The live Webcast, “Judicial Disqualification One Year after Caperton v. A.T. Massey Coal,” takes place Wednesday, June 2 at 1 p.m. EDT. Patton co-authored an amicus curiae brief for the National Center for State Courts’ Conference of Chief Justices in Caperton v. A.T. Massey Coal Company, Inc., 129 S.Ct. 2252, 2266 (2009) (referred to during oral argument by the Justices and counsel and cited by the Court’s majority and main dissent).

Then, the live Webcast, “Restrictions on Judicial Political Conduct Eight Years after Republican Party of Minnesota v. White,” takes place Thursday, June 3 at 1 p.m. EDT. Patton co-authored an amicus curiae brief for the Conference of Chief Justice in that case, too, that was cited in an opinion. This program will review the post-White caselaw to determine what issues have been resolved and what questions remain. 

The American Judicature Society (AJS), founded in 1913, is an independent, national, nonpartisan organization of judges, lawyers and other members of the public who seek to improve the justice system. Primary areas of focus are judicial independence, judicial conduct and ethics, judicial selection, the jury, the criminal justice system and public understanding of the justice system.

Patton is a partner in the Litigation Group and former chair of the Appellate Group at Bose McKinney & Evans. While practicing law, he taught Appellate Advocacy and Procedure at Indiana University School of Law in Bloomington, wrote a book on Indiana Appellate Procedure published by West Group, authored a chapter in a book on appellate briefs, and published several articles on Indiana appellate procedure.

Patton attended the University of Aberdeen in Scotland and graduated cum laude from Wabash College. He received his law degree from Indiana University Mauer School of Law — Bloomington.
